Bulk orders

What is the minimum bulk order?

One pallet of bricks, or one half pallet of plugs. A pallet of bricks holds about 200 of them, weighs about one metric ton, and measures 42 x 42 x about 90 inches, and a container holds 20 pallets. Seed starter plugs ship on half pallets of about 96,000 plugs.

What does buffered mean for a grower?

The coir is soaked before it is pressed, so excess salts wash away and the pH settles into balance. That is done before it ships, so yours only needs water. The Bulk page carries the published figures for the grade.

Where do you ship, and how long does it take?

Anywhere in the contiguous United States. Lead time is at least 3 months.

Can I get a sample first?

Yes. Samples are free on request, and we cover the shipping. Ask for one on the quote form.

How do I get a quote?

Fill in the quote form on the Bulk page or at the foot of the homepage, or email sales@supremecoco.com. We quote per order.

Buffering

Why does coco coir need buffering?

Fresh coco coir carries natural salts. Some come from the husk itself and some from the water used to process it. Those salts sit in the same spots your plants look for calcium and magnesium, so they can get in the way. Buffering soaks the coir until the excess washes out and the pH settles into balance, which gives roots a cleaner start.

Is buffered the same as rinsed or washed?

No. Washing rinses away the loose salts. Buffering goes a step further and changes what the coir itself is holding on to, so coir can be washed and still not be buffered.

Which Supreme Coco products are buffered?

The Coco Coir Brick and the Seed Starter Plugs are both buffered. The Organic Mulch is not, and it does not need to be. Those are chunky coconut husk chips rather than the fine coir in the brick, so buffering would not change how they work.

Does buffered mean the same thing on every bag?

Not always, so it is worth reading the label. Some brands use buffered to mean the coir was soaked to swap out excess salts. Others use it to mean the pH was adjusted. Those are two different things, so two bags that both say buffered are not always making the same promise.

Can I buffer coco coir myself?

You can. Gardeners rinse unbuffered coir well, soak it in water mixed with a calcium and magnesium feed, then drain it and rinse it through again. It works, and plenty of people do it. It also takes a day, some space, and a few buckets. Ours is buffered before it ships, so yours only needs water.

Coco Coir Brick

How much coco coir does one brick make?

One 11 lb brick expands up to 72 quarts (18 gallons) of coco coir when you add water.

What does buffered mean?

Buffered coco coir is soaked before it is pressed, so excess salts wash away and the pH settles into balance. Coir that has not been buffered can hold on to some of the calcium and magnesium you feed, which is why buffering is a simple extra step for a cleaner start.

How much water does the brick need?

Add water a little at a time and let the brick absorb it. A rough guide is about 5 parts water to 1 part coir. Stop when the coir is loose and fluffy with no dry spots.

How do I use it in my garden?

Mix about 1 part coir with 2 parts soil in garden beds, or blend 20 to 30 percent coir into potting mixes. It also works well for seed starting and containers.

Organic Mulch

How much does one brick make?

One 11 lb brick expands up to 72 quarts (18 gallons) of mulch when you add water.

How do I use it?

Place the brick in a large container, add water, and let it soak. Fluff the expanded chips with a fork, then spread 2 to 3 inches around your plants or mix them into the soil.

Is it safe for pets?

Yes. It is gentle on plants, people, and pets, so you can use it anywhere in your garden.

How is it different from bark mulch?

It is made from organic coconut husk, a renewable resource. The chips lock in moisture, help keep weeds down, and break down slowly to improve your soil naturally.

Seed Starter Plugs

How do I use the plugs?

Moisten the plugs, sow a seed into the pre-formed hole in each one, and keep them evenly moist. Once roots show at the sides, transplant the whole plug into soil or a pot.

Do I remove the mesh before planting?

No. Plant the plug mesh and all. The mesh naturally biodegrades in soil, so roots are never disturbed.

Are the plugs peat-free?

Yes. The plugs are buffered coco coir, a renewable, peat-free material.
